The Kaliningrad seaside occupies a special place among the Russian sea coasts. From the Baltic to the Curonian Spit, it stretches for tens of kilometers with a necklace of beautiful pearls: Baltiysk, Svetlogorsk, Zelenogradsk, Yantarny, Lesnoy, Rybachy.
Getting to know the westernmost region of Russia should begin, of course, with its capital Kaliningrad or Konigsberg, as the locals call it in the old way. In the past, the main city of East Prussia still retains traces of its former royal power - the Cathedral of the 14th century, the Royal and Brandenburg Gates, the villas of the Amalienau district, built in the Art Nouveau style, the University building. After wandering along the cobblestones of the old town and breathing in the air of history, we go to the coast.
Baltiysk is the westernmost point of Russia, and for a long time remained closed due to the deployment of the Russian Navy's naval base there. But since the mid-90s, the situation has changed, and the city has become accessible not only to residents of the Kaliningrad region, but also to all tourists. The Cathedral of St. George's Naval Cathedral, the lighthouse built in the 18th century, and, of course, the remains of a 17th-century Swedish fortress, planned in the shape of a pentagon with five forts, are worth a look there.
Next, our way lies to the village of Yantarny, which was named after the plant located in it. Tourists can go to inspect the quarry where amber is mined, and then visit the museum and a shop with souvenirs and amber jewelry.
We continue our trip and go to Svetlogorsk, the oldest and most famous resort on the Kaliningrad coast. Its history began back in the 20s of the 19th century, and currently it has the status of a resort of federal significance. There are dozens of hotels, boarding houses and sanatoriums with therapeutic mineral water and mud. The long promenade of Svetlogorsk embankment is the hallmark of the city, in the evening vacationers stroll slowly along it, admiring the sunset.
We are completing our journey along the Kaliningrad coast in Zelenogradsk, a resort that the Germans called royal for its exceptionally beautiful nature and many parks. It still has old German buildings, a town hall and a water tower from the early 20th century. Next to the tower there is a funny museum of cats, the exhibits of which amaze with the variety of materials used for them.
You should also definitely visit the Curonian Spit, a nature reserve that begins right behind Zelenograd, where sand and pine trees are combined by nature into a unique landscape.
